About Greek Children’s Fund
Our Mission
The Greek Children’s Fund was established in 1983 by Stanley Matthews, a Greek American businessman whose mission was to provide financial assistance towards the daily, non-medical needs of children of Hellenic descent and their families who suffer from cancer and life-threatening illnesses. Throughout its 40-year history, the Fund has continued to better the world and has remained an all-volunteer run organization that raises funds through events, sponsorships and partnerships. To date, the Greek Children’s Fund has raised in excess of $10 million and has helped over 10,000 families and their children be treated in the United States.
As of 2020, the GCF continued to evolve, helping those (of any age) combat the difficulties of COVID 19 and looking to the future, educating the world on the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle with programs and partners surrounding health, fitness and nutrition.
The GCF continues to have long-standing partnerships with several prestigious medical institutions in America and in the past has worked with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, Schneider Children’s Hospital (SCH) in New Hyde Park, NY, All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, FL, and The Joseph Sanzari Children’s Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, NJ. At SCH, in addition to non-medical financial assistance, the GCF provided the Greek American community with professional bilingual/bicultural social services through a part-time social worker/program coordinator.
Our Values
The Greek Children’s Fund (GCF) focuses on the well-being of every child and has built a non-profit organization based on philanthropy, kindness, and collaboration. The values have led GCF to successfully assist thousands of children and their families with the non-medical financial problems that are caused by illness and displacement.
Philanthropy
The Greek Children’s Fund is built on the generosity of its founder, Stanley Matthews, the volunteers who share much of their time, the Greek American community that provides monetary and moral support, and the medical institutions that give their resources and knowledge. Those who contribute to its humanitarian efforts collectively embody the principals of both the Greek and American traditions of caring for others in a generous and open way.
Kindness
Members of the committee have tremendous care for the children with life-threatening illnesses and for the vulnerability their families experience during this challenging time. Every donation or act of support made to the Greek Children’s Fund affirms the power kindness and compassion to nourish people enduring hard times.
Collaboration
The ongoing collaboration of the Greek Children’s Fund volunteers, the hospitals, the patients, their families and the support of individuals, organizations and community groups has been the formula for its success. Only by working together with each of these groups could we have had the opportunity to offer this level of assistance to children and families for four decades.
